Data Analytics

How do you trust data? At Premier Crop we give you advice by analyzing your data. Turning that data into actionable decisions so you can profit in each part of your field. We accept data from any device, any color tractor or monitor. No matter what your equipment is, we help you maximize industry technology to operate efficiently and improve crop performance.

We often hear, “we have all this data, now what?” or “how do we get growers to implement changes?” Our goal is to get a grower to a deeper level of understanding with their data. By interpreting the results at the field level, growers can make better decisions on field management to ideally accomplish improved profitability and efficiency.

As a farmer what are you doing to break down ‘big data’ to define variability at the field level in order to make smarter, more profitable decisions? It's time to start using your data and farm analytics to help you profit. Learn more about using farm analytics to make improvements on your operation

To efficiently collect data on your farming operation, it’s important to have a good plan and keep notes as you go, collect in a timely manner, and verify that data matches what happened throughout the season. There are many data points that need to be collected, verified, and entered to get a full-scope picture of your operation for analytics purposes. Read more on efficient data collection.

Maps are a great way to visualize agronomic data, but the real power for decision making is in the data file. Organizing data layers into a georeferenced database structure allows us to tackle real-world complexity that is applied agronomy. Applied agronomy at the field level is the collision of hundreds of manageable variables – it isn't rocket science; it is way more complex.

Premier Crop embraces this complexity with respect. We respect that all agronomy is local, and what drives yields and profitability changes year to year within areas of the country, across a grower's operation, field by field, and in each part of a field. Read more about how to utilize farm data to improve your operation.

As farmers face another year with challenging markets and high inputs, we as agronomic advisors continue to work with our clients in order to find where we can remove some of the guessing when it comes to the decision-making process of planning another season. It is important to look at the return on investment for not just for every field or every acre, but what it is actually taking to produce every bushel. The best data is the color blind! It doesn't care about the color of the seed logo, the equipment used, the nutrient package or crop protection choice. It isn't cleansed or stored or manipulated to tilt the results in one direction or another. Color blind data has no stake in what product or rate wins. Recent university studies show that on average, 50% to 70% of the N that feeds our crop is soil-supplied, not fertilizer-supplied. This means we need to better understand the differences in N-supplying abilities of different management zones in our fields, across farming operations and throughout local areas. Read more about building your nutrient data.

One of the services Premier Crop provides growers with is community or group data analysis from a regional basis. Growers can confidentially and anonymously share their field data with other growers in their region though written data-sharing agreements. Group data analysis compliments field- and grower- level analysis; growers receive actionable field intelligence they can use on their own fields. Read more digging deep into data

For Premier Crop, building a partnership to use data to make better agronomic decisions has always begun with this foundation: the grower owns the data, data is only pooled with permission, and even pooled data belongs to the growers who shared data. But Premier Crop’s history and operating principals don’t mean that’s the right way or the only way to use data to benefit growers. Learn more about data benchmarking.

Rent negotiations can be difficult, but your data is the starting place. Can you use your data to rank each field by profitability? Obviously it’s not as easy as the highest- to lowest-yielding, as costs of inputs and operations, as well as land costs, are major pieces to be considered. Rank your fields over multiple years. Read more about using data to reduce rent.

The more data you collect, the more you can make data driven decisions. Applied fertility rates, planting dates, planter performance, trait packages, soil test levels and planting populations are examples of some of the critical agronomic decisions you make every year. You might be able to hold Mother Nature accountable for the first 50% or even 75% of your yield results, but the other half or less (and all the profit) is your responsibility! Read on about how Premier Crop can help you put your field data to use.

What are the effects of data based decision-making? Initially, it creates a huge economic advantage for the growers using data to make decisions. Long-term, once a practice becomes industry standard, the advantage is lost and becomes the norm. The most significant outcome is that data based decision-making empowers growers. We are entering a new era in crop production when growers will frequently have better information on product performance than the company producing the product or the selling retailer. The day has arrived when growers, using Premier Crop or a similar system, can evaluate hybrids by yield and profitability in their fields and local geography. Testimonials and “trust me, it works” simply won’t cut it. Learn more about how Premier Crop helps growers make data based decisions on their farming operations.

At Premier Crop, our customers are in the thick of delivering data analysis results to growers. For our customers and staff that means a lot of “fixing” data. But data fixing doesn’t stop at the yield file. Why would data need to be fixed? Many times, it’s because something didn’t get logged correctly or as completely as needed. Quality data analysis relies on quality data. And quality data requires hard work and attention to detail. Read more about collecting quality data.

Big data is a phrase that has integrated this world of technology across industries. It's about capturing relevant data from a huge number of sources, and translating it into something that people can use. Big data provides actionable insights to solve problems at scale and at speed. In this world of ag, we have billions of dollars of venture capital funding pouring into agriculture through technology builds. Big data has been at the center of that.
